Fleas, ticks, and other biting insects that affect pets and humans

Bed Bug
Cimex lectularius
A blood-feeding ectoparasite that has become a major urban pest across Canada. Toronto ranks #1 in North America for bed bug infestations. These nocturnal feeders hide in mattress seams, headboards, and furniture cracks, emerging at night to feed. Not related to cleanliness - spread through travel and used furniture.

Black-legged Tick
Ixodes scapularis
Also known as the Deer Tick, this hard-bodied arachnid is the primary vector for Lyme disease in eastern and central Canada. Risk areas are expanding annually. Can transmit disease after feeding for 24-36 hours.

Cat Flea
Ctenocephalides felis
The most common domestic flea in Canada, infesting both cats and dogs despite its name. A blood-feeding ectoparasite that causes intense itching and can transmit tapeworms. Pupae can remain dormant for months, causing re-infestations.
